Choosing a programme

How to compare retina training

Start by separating medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery and inherited retinal disease training. A shared retina label does not mean two fellowships offer the same operating experience or research pathway.

  • Compare the stated medical and surgical focus, rather than choosing on duration alone.
  • Ask which procedures the fellow performs, how supervision changes and how time is divided between clinics, operating rooms and research.
  • Check whether a clinical fellowship, research appointment or observership is being advertised; each has different responsibilities.

Directory snapshot: 214 fellowship listings and 26 observership listings. Published fellowship lengths include 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, 30 months, 3 years. 96 fellowship listings do not yet have a confirmed fixed duration. Counts describe this directory, not current vacancies or all programmes worldwide.
